In a country surrounded by water, you can bet that there will be some great beaches. We were not disappointed. Everyone knows of famous Bondi beach in Sydney but there are hundreds of great beaches all the way up the coast of Australia. We spent so many nights at gorgeous beachfront resorts that it's hard to keep them all straight.
One night we got into the hotel after dark. After quickly eating dinner, we all got our swimming suits on and headed for the beach. We ran to the water and dove in without even remembering that it was winter in Australia. It's a good thing that the hotel had two hot tubs. We raced back and forth between the ocean and the hot tubs countless times until we breathlessly collapsed in the sand and lay on our backs to watch the stars. I have never seen so many stars in my life. We would see shooting stars every few minutes all night. The next day a few of us got up early and went back to the beach to watch the sun rise above the sea before breakfast.
Another memorable beach was on Fraser Island. It was so long and wide that our bus drove on it to get around. Half of a day on Fraser Island was devoted to swimming in a lake formed by the sand blowing in from the beach that had clogged up a river. The beaches in Australia and New Zealand are truly amazing.
